Hen&ink Coop: Janie Bynum

About Janie Bynum

As an experienced author and illustrator, Janie has created many lovable characters and stories for younger children. Otis, her picture book about a pig who hates mud, was recognized as a Junior Library Guild Selection.

Janie enjoys developing characters to which children (and adults) can connect—especially through humor (and sometimes with a little bit of irony). She is currently focusing on writing and illustrating picture books for younger children and would love to develop graphic-style board books for babies and toddlers. Janie works in mixed media, including traditional watercolor and digital techniques.

Growing up in Texas, Janie graduated with a BFA in graphic design with an emphasis on illustration. She loves to travel and experience other cultures, drawing inspiration from the people, landscape, and cuisine.

She is also a freelance graphic designer and illustrator for other markets and a huge fan of the Oxford comma, em-dashes, and parentheses.

Known to her friends as a bit of a nomad, Janie and her old dog Oliver live in a nearly-100-year-old storybook house in southwest Michigan—for now.
